Prioritizing Scalp Health Over Style: My Honest Experience with Loc Styles in 2023

Hey loc fam! If you follow me on Instagram you might remember that resolution I made last year to try out a whole load of loc styles? Yeah, about that…

The algorithm was definitely serving up some fire looks: intricate braids, curly goddess ends, and everything in between. My fingers were itching to recreate, but 2023 had other plans. Here’s why my locs mostly chilled in their natural state:

Sensitive edges, ouch: Back in December 2021 I treated myself to a professional wash and style (you’ve got to check out that blog post ) Well, taking down those two-strand twist was a whole ‘nother story. My hairline felt like it went through it, and the only styles I could handle were a loose ponytail or a half-up, half-down situation. Let’s be honest, most of the time, my locs were just like, “Nope, we’re good here.” Bottom line: scalp health and happy hair trumped adventurous styles any day.

Time, time and more time: Turns out, a lot of those stunning styles involved some serious curl action. Perm rods, flexi rods, and pipe cleaners. And let me tell you, between setting rollers, sitting under the dryer or air-drying, and praying to God that none would be damp, I just wasn’t giving myself enough time. We all know drying time is the holy grail of natural hair curls, and I was woefully underestimating its power.

Fast forward to 2024, my locs are turning five in April , and I’m ready for some style action! But this time, there’s no pressure to hit a certain quota before December 31st. It’s all about building confidence, exploring at my own pace, and, of course, planning ahead (drying time, I’m looking at you!). My locs are thriving, and I’m loving every minute of the journey, even the chill phases.

So, loc fam, how often do you rock a new style? What’s your go-to look when you need something quick and easy? Let’s share the love and the loc wisdom in the comments!
