Expat Parenting | Fatherhood Edition

Expat Parenting | Fatherhood Edition

Every year as Father’s Day approaches, I ponder on the impacts of Fathers (specifically) in the lives of their daughters. Growing up I heard many of the aunties and grandmothers share stories about their personal struggles, victories and plain old funny memories of their journeys in parenting, but seldom did I hear such anecdotes from the uncles and grandfathers.

Over the years, I have grown an interest in platforms that highlighted and presented fatherhood in this day and age in an authentic way. If you are reading this as a parent, you know too well the responsibility that comes with stewarding the lives of our children. Many of our views and old habits are being challenged and stretched.

This Father’s Day I wanted to hear from someone very dear to me and who shares in my parenting journey, my husband. My husband and I moved to San Antonio Texas in November 2016, a week after getting married. We had our daughter in October 2018 and it was as if the reality of not being with our extended family and community back home hit us much harder. This aspect of our journey was something we could not have fully considered.

Below my husband talks about his experience through fatherhood. Watch to the end as he leaves some words of advice for expat parents or parents living far away from their families.

Happy Father’s Day!
