5 Loc Styles for medium length hair|My go-to looks

Locs glorious locs, we can do so much with them. Check out some of my favourite ways to style my medium length locs in this weeks blog

Through conversation, a recurring theme is seeing locs as a restrictive style, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth. Personally, I have kept styling simple and minimal with my starter locs, but plan to explore more as the mature. Here are some of my go-to styles. Tools: some stretchy hair ties and bobby pins.

  1. Hair down with side part– How simple can it get? Honestly, this is how I wear my hair most of the time. The ease of the Shake’n Go life. This style has no tension (perfect for those with thinning or sensitive edges) and often looks good with or without a fresh twist. If you have some rebellious strands, use a few bobby pins for control and you are good to go. Pop on some hooped or statement earrings when you are heading out and you will look and feel great.

2. Wavy locs– Bored of the straight od the straight locs? Switch up a basic style by adding some waves. Throw your locs into braids for a couple of days and when you take them down, you should have gorgeous waves. I have seen other locked sisters doing bantu knots or using rollers to achieve a more curly look- something I am excited to try. To ensure the best results I would say give ample setting time. If you are pressed for time (and don’t mind using heat) maybe sit under the dryer or out in the sun. This look is great one for a more formal event where you want less tension on those edges.

3. Side bangs/fringe with high ponytail– When I want to style my hair for a special occasion or a style to disguise fuller roots, this elevates my appearance. Something about pulling my hair back makes me look put-together. Have the bangs hanging or get a couple of pins to loosely pin back the ends and create a sweep. This is how I chose to wear my hair for my birthday dinner and it was PERFECT! I added a pair of gold long drop earrings and it was just the look for me.

4. Headwraps/Scarves– These can be such a saviour! Whenever I’m having a bad/lazy hair day, a head wrap always comes in the clutch. The great thing about wraps is that they can be worn very simply or have a more complex style, fitting every occasion. In my African household, I made use of the scarp printed fabric from outfits for festivities, for my wraps. Now, there are various companies that supply wraps, scarves and bandanas in glorious colours and prints for us to purchase here, here and Here. YouTube has tons of tutorials for styles.

5. Slick ponytail with middle part– The first time I tried this I was a little shocked at how great it looked. After a fresh wash and re-twist this style was super easy to achieve and I was feeling myself. This is definitely one of those styles that I thought was no longer an option, but clearly that was a myth! Even with hair that hasn’t been re-twisted it can still work, it just might need a few more hair ties especially if you have thicker locs, a spritz of moisture (water, Rosewater, aloe vera juice), a soft brush, a little edge control and a satin/silk scarf to set the look. Oh and don’t forget those bobby pins!

Bonus style: None of the above working out for you? Try a cool cap or fedora. So cute!

Play around with your hair and see what works for you. Use rollers, wraps and choose from the beautiful loc jewellery on the market.

What are some of your favourite styles? Do you keep it simple or do you like to explore?
